So I now have another problem with my MG Midget and haven't even got to the track yet!
My question is: Can you replace the starter motor by removing the Dynamo and not removing the Distributor. I ask this as I'm not really proficient enough to correct any timing issues that may result from removal/replacement of the distributor - even if I mark it's position prior to removal.
Thank you in advance

Yes, just remove everything you can to get good access such as dynamo, distributor cap, rotor arm (in case you damage it), leads to coil etc. I usually label everything just in case I forget which leads go where! You should just have the main lead from the solenoid and two big bolts to remove then you can remove the starter motor. It's not one of the nicest jobs on a Midget but there are much worse!
If you are feeling flush then Moss have an offer on at the mo where there is 25% off the top 100 sellers and the high torque starter is one of them! I've got one on mine and I'd recommend it as the standard ones are pretty weak if you've got a high compression engine.

Thank you, precise info and just what I wanted to hear.
I have just looked at the Moss site and can see which starter I need. They say they are a direct replacement but actually look deeper that the standard one. I'm assuming that they will still fit in the limited space available without any problems!
After all my mechanical tribulations I'm feeling distinctly unflushed but nevertheless will pop to Moss tomorrow to get one!
Thanks once again.

All done. High torque starter fitted and working - it was just as you said and I also had to move the mounting flange to fit it.
It was surprising how many times gravity gremlins allowed bolts, nuts and spanners to drop down through the engine bay and then disappear from sight!

Good to hear - I looked in my engine bay last night and thought it looked a bit of a tight fit and wondered if I'd given out duff gen!
It will make a totally different sound when starting now, more like a modern car - until it fires up anyway!
Glad you got it sorted
